Which is Better: Quartz or Mechanical Watch?

Traditional mechanical watches had their origins in the 14th century. The mechanical watch is powered by a wound spring and the balance wheel regulates the time. The invention of the quartz watch in the 70's has however dominated the watch market . Today , 90% of all watches manufactured are quartz watches. Quartz watches are cheaper, more accurate, reliable and require less maintenance. Quartz watches are 60 times more accurate than mechanical watches. A quartz watch loses or gains 1 second a week while a mechanical watch may lose 1 minute a week. This translates to bigger inaccuracies for longer periods of time. In a month you would lose 4 seconds for a quartz watch while a mechanical watch loses up to 4 minutes in a month. The quartz crystal is accurate because of its extremely high oscillations of up to 32,768 cycles per second.

Quartz watches have few moving parts. Moving parts cause friction and wear and tear and as a result they are more prone to breakdown. By having less moving parts quartz watches do not have breakdown as often as mechanical watches. Also , the gear train of a mechanical watch is under constant load from the mainspring whereas the gear train in a quartz watch is not under any load.

Mechanical watches also require servicing every three years to keep the watch working in good condition and tell the time accurately.

Mechanical watches require winding up which provide reserve power of 40 hours. An automatic watch relies on the movement of the wrist to power itself. But still, if you do not wear it all the time and just wear occasionally, you will find the time on the watch has stopped and you need to adjust the time . A quartz watch powered by a battery is constantly powered and tells accurate time all the time and do not need time adjustment. Of course you do need the change the battery after two to three years.

Mechanical watches have longer lifespans than that of quartz watches. A mechanical watch can last indefinitely with proper care and servicing. Should it break down , parts are always available for repair. A mechanical watch can become a collectible and it can fetch high resale value due to its rarity. A quartz watch on the other hand features electronic circuitry that has a limited lifespan. You cannot repair it because the electronic components for it would be obsolete by then.

Lastly, a mechanical watch is not as sensitive to extreme cold temperature as quartz watches. In extreme cold, the mechanical watch still keeps working while the cold will temporarily shut down the battery of the quartz watch.

Croquet - Quintessentially English

Croquet is the quintessential upper-class English summer sport. It is the reserve of the well-spoken, wealthy gentlemen of London and the Home Counties.

Dont get me wrong, Croquet is a fantastic game. It looks beautiful, strictly laid out on an immaculate lawn, coloured balls dancing through elegant white hoops, white trousers and collared shirts betraying its ancient English heritage. It goes so well with sunshine, barbeques and Pimms summer cocktails. There is a handicapping system, like in golf, so that good players can play pleasantly and competitively with beginners. While its basic rules are easy to pick up, its extended, complicated and convoluted laws together with reams written on tactics can satisfy the most ardent and enthusiastic player, umpire, or spectator. A nice gentile game, one would suppose. We might be led to think that this great game, like cricket, tennis and golf, should break out from its ultra-posh home and become democratised such that anyone can and does play. We might start lobbying for inner-city Croquet lawns: Astroturfed permanent installations so that fourteen-year-olds can have a game on a Friday night instead of littering the steps of Debenhams. But we would be very wrong to do so.

When John Prescott was photographed playing the game in his country retreat when officially stepping in as PM while Tony was on holiday, there was an uproar. This man, elected as the peoples champion in the northern Labour heartlands, was betraying his roots, his party and the ordinary working folk of this great country. Croquet is not for working men. It is part of the aristocratic culture that a Labour leader ought to oppose or at least avoid. Croquet must retain these associations: it must be seen as an exclusive and snobby pastime, relic of the empire and everything bad. To make it popular would be a disaster.

The reason is that Croquet causes ones blood to boil. You can miss a ball or hoop you are right next to, surrendering your turn and the chance to get into a leading position. And in missing, you have also put your balls right next to those of your opponent, who gleefully steps up to whack your balls fifty metres apart and impossibly distant from the hoop you had been a foot away from and so far from the other balls that they are a mere dot on the horizon. He then goes on a break and leaves his balls next to each other so that he can wreak havoc when he returns. Recovery is then impossible. If you get your balls close together, your opponent sends them apart again. If you get close to a hoop, you will spend half an hour hitting the rim and having to start again.

There is no other game in which a small mistake or an opponents fluke will cost you so dear. There is no other game that will frustrate every sinew in your body. There is no other game in which your misfortune is transferred so readily to your opponents smug glee. There is no other game which is so directly and personally vindictive. There is no other game that generates quite as much hate for the opponent. There is no other game in which a three stone mallet is given to you. And therefore it is no small mercy that there is no other game quite so restrained by social graces. Without the strict gentlemanly code of conduct, backed up by a close-knit and exclusive society that knows you and your family; without the need to keep up a good reputation and behave in the way expected by your peers in front of powerful men and impressionable ladies, the Croquet lawn would be a bloodbath. This game must be handled with extreme caution.

Link Building Do's and Dont's

Link building is a technique that most webmasters find hard to execute. Years ago it was simple enough, choose your key word for your anchor text and use it for all incoming links. Now, that just doesnt have the importance it once did and most sites are trying to rank well for more than just one keyword.

First, what is an anchor text? Quite simply it is the text used in your incoming links. So if someone linked to your site using Big Widgets, Big Widgets is the anchor text. Now the keywords you use as anchor text contributes to the importance of the page it links too and the search engines will give that page a small boost in the rankings when someone searches for that term. Hopefully, you can see the extreme importance to picking the right anchor text. This is meant to work in conjunction with all the other optimization you do for your site and is an important cog in the wheel of your SEO strategy but not the whole wheel itself.

Here are a few dos and donts on link building especially if you are new to link building and hopefully a few reminders for those that have been doing it a while.

- Do link with sites that may be of interest to your visitors. Often referred to as relevant links, these links are deemed more worthwhile to have than just any link. For example if your site is about cars, a link from a site that sells real estate will do you no good compared to a link from a site that sells car parts.

- Do link with sites that have a clearly labeled link page from their main page. Hidden or hard to find link pages do not help you build traffic. Of course getting a link directly on the home page would be best but if you can not, at least make sure there is a chance someone may find it.

- Do stay organized. Use a spreadsheet, notebook or link exchange software to help you keep track of the link exchanges you have requested and the contact details of the webmasters. This will help you save time by not trying to contact someone who just denied you a link and help you do follow up with those that need to be.

- Don't confuse quantity with quality. Trust me; the search engine will never confuse them. Good, relevant quality links will win over time. Dont believe me, check out a popular search term and see how many back links the sites in the top position have. You may be surprised to find that must have less than 500.

- Don't assume everybody will link with you. Sometimes it may be hard to understand but some sites will not be interested no matter how good the offer to trade links with you. Dont get discouraged, move to the next site and then the next until you find a site that will, then do it again.

- Don't use link farms. Link farms are pages we have all seen that have little or no real content and are just covered with link after link. You are unlikely to get extra traffic from them and it may cost you in terms of a search engine penalty.

Link building is imperative to having a good search engine ranking and a good link building strategy is one that is straight forward and never ends. Dont try short cuts and be very particular whom you link too. It could mean lots of money and ranking if you build links the right way.
